Who are these mountain biking maniacs?

The Spokejunkies are a group of fun-loving yet serious recreational riders. Members range in age from 16 (the group-imposed minimum unless accompanied by a riding parent) to, well, let's just say they're old enough that they'd rather we not say. From blue collar shift workers to PhD-toting psychologists, the Spokejunkies appeal to all with one common factor, the quest for a great ride and a good time. They offer the beginner a forum to ride in a large group while learning valuable information from more experienced riders. There are no requirements for membership, except that you are cool and like to ride (we don't want uptight people, if you want to wear flashy clothes and act like you are God's gift to mountain biking then join some other club, or come along and prepare to be ridiculed). The ability level of our riders varies considerably from very good to beginner. The Spokejunkies have rides every weekend from April-November in Ohio and Durango, CO. The rides are on Saturday or Sunday. The rides are typically planned out a few weeks in advance and posted on the web site. In addition, there are also out of state trips planned during the season.

What happens on a ride?

On the day of a ride, the Junkies meet in a designated parking site at the trailhead to gear up. Bikes are tuned, group introductions are made and new members are welcomed. The Spokejunkies then self-divide(depending on group size) into smaller groups by riding ability, faster riders toward the front, and slower riders to the rear. Group leaders are given walkie talkies to maintain contact during the ride (for directional assistance as well as for aid in case of emergency). When everyone is ready, the Junkies hit the trail.

What happens if I get a flat or need to stop for a break?

The greatest aspect of Spokejunkies rides is the willingness of every Junkie to help one another. Riders with mechanical or physical trouble are not left behind. Riders all look out for one another and come to the aid of those needing assistance, with spare parts, extra water, and as much bike repair knowledge as they can collectively generate.

How far do you ride?

Distances vary by trail, but an average ride is between 10 to 15 miles. At the end of most rides, the Junkies head to a local favorite eatery to refuel themselves and rehash stories of amazing riding feats and spectacular crashes.

How do I join?

A rider is considered a Spokejunkie after three rides, and fills out a profile on the forums along with a riding picture. There is no fee. If you join you don't have to attend any regular meetings (we don't have any), you don't have to do any charity work, and you won't ever be harassed to pay a membership fee, you can just ride (or not ride) when you feel like it. All you have to do is show up and ride and bring your sense of humor! A Spokejunkie Membership card is offered for those who wish to be an official member. It's a one time fee of $25 and entitles you to discounts at local bike shops as well as on certain Spokejunkie merchandise. See the SJ Gear page for details. Everyone should sign up for the main ridelist. Just hit the ridelist link in the main menu. The ridelist will give you weekly ride details as well as other info about the junkies. If a ride is changed due to weather it will be posted on the message board by 9:30a.m. the day of the ride.

What about Trail Maintenance?

The Spokejunkies do not organize trail maintenance days, do not lobby for better access or try and save riding areas. This does not mean that we do not whole heartedly support these actions, but there are already very well organized groups to do this. We encourage all of our members to participate in trail maintenance individually or with their local trail advocacy group.

Can I be a member of another mountain biking group such as IMBA, OMBA, Trails 2000, or MMBA?

Absolutely!
